Cornbread & Sweet Tea
Cookbooks are some of the most interesting books to get lost in. Reading is great. Reading books about food, even better. I don't have a vast amount of cookbooks, but there are a few on my shelf that I adore. One is my Mitford Cookbook & Kitchen Reader.
Jan Karon is the author of the Mitford book series. I began reading these stories as a young adult. I find an uncomplicated fiction story extremely relaxing. I love a book that has characters I want as neighbors.
When I found this Kitchen Reader, adding it to my shelf was a must.
This book has recipes of the many dishes woven throughout the Mitford stories, accompanied by anecdotes and passages from the series. I have, on a few occasions, sat down with this book and not only planned meals around its recipes but let time slip away while being reacquainted with the Mitford characters.
With the extra time on my hands this week, I tried both a sweet tea and a cornbread recipe that I hadn't tried before. Both were an absolute hit. The sweet tea will be a summer staple and the cornbread; well, I think I'll find a special dish to serve it on in the future. We will affectionately call it the "cornbread plate".
Thank you, Jan Karon, for the gift of some of my very favorite stories, and recipes that have contributed to my southern cooking repertoire.
